Introduction to Public Health Research Advocacy Course

Duration: One Day

Dates: Thursday 26th January 2012, 10am– 4pm (registration from 9.30am)

Location: Cardiff University School of Social Sciences, Glamorgan Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff, CF10 3WT. Map and directions

Course fee: £200 (and a reduced rate of £100 for UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence staff and students).

There is no fee for:

DECIPHer funded staff and students;
DECIPHer adopted staff and students.

 

Course aims and objectives:

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Have a working knowledge of the importance and potential of research advocacy relating to public health;
  • Identify and implement strategies to promote research findings;
  • Be aware of a range of approaches to engaging with policy makers/ media/ public;
  • Be able to identify the opportunities and risks of engaging external agencies;
  • Be able to use an advocacy approach to add value, change behaviours and effect outcomes stemming from the application of research.

 

Who the course is intended for:

This course is designed for researchers and health and social care professionals who wish to learn how to extend the policy and practice impact of their research and how different factors contribute to this process. Participants should have knowledge of current public health research.

 

Course outline:

The course will be a combination of speaker presentations and group work, where participants will be encouraged to apply the knowledge they have learnt to a practical situation.

 

Presentations will include:

  • Public health research advocacy;
  • Writing an effective press release;
  • Moving evidence: the role of NGOs and lobbyists;
  • Reflections on research advocacy: the tensions of university research.

 

Small group exercise:

Delegates will be sent two research papers with their registration pack. Delegates will be asked to work in groups to develop an advocacy strategy and action plan in relation to the research findings.

 

Teaching time:

Teaching is approximately 5 hours.

 

Recommended reading:

Delegates will be provided with pre-course reading.

 

Making a booking:

To book a place on the course please complete the online booking form.

When we receive the booking form, we will confirm your provisional place on the course and, where applicable, request payment. Booking cannot be finalised until payment is received. If we have not received payment by ONE MONTH after your booking or ONE MONTH before the course start date, we may offer your place to another person on the course waiting list.

On receipt of payment, we will send an email confirming your place on the course. Course details, including directions and a provisional course timetable will be sent to you approximately one month before the course start date.

 

Cancellations and refunds:

If you cancel less than TWO WEEKS before the course, we are unable to offer a refund. In the unlikely event that the short course has to be cancelled, our liability is limited to refund of course fees only.

 

Applicants eligible for free places:

In fairness to others, please do not book on the course unless you are sure that you will attend it. There is a PENALTY FEE of £20 per day if you book on the course and do not attend the full course. Please let us know 2 WEEKS before the course start date if you wish to cancel in order to avoid the penalty fee.
